“Batwara 1947” isn’t about telling the Partition story anew, it’s about embracing the Bollywood melodrama that it offers and, in the main, it does just fine. The film, which is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, is about the Mirza family, which has had to leave its home in Meerut for Lahore, and, as the film goes on, discovers that its new home is already occupied by its previous owner, an elderly Hindu woman (Shabana Azmi).

Sunny Deol stars with patriarch Sikandar Mirza, Preity Zinta and Karan Deol. Is this Partition saga one of the best, or is it just borrowing weighty history? Here’s an honest look at how it holds up.

Batwara 1947 Movie Overview

Batwara 1947 is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, produced by Aamir Khan Productions and will be released a day before Independence Day on August 14, 2026. It is based on Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, and depicts a Muslim family that move to Lahore and share their house with its old owner, a Hindu. The film is lead by Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta and Shabana Azmi and music is provided by A.R. Rahman.

Batwara 1947 Movie Cast and Crew

People in front of and behind the camera are the backbone of Batwara 1947 and this is evident in each shot. Sunny Deol debuts as Sikandar Mirza, the head of the family who is forced to start over after Partition takes everything from him. It’s a job that draws on his signature screen-showering power, a few loud, mass-heavy beats that are nice to hear, but he also works out the quieter, more reserved beats that are equally loaded.

Preity Zinta stars as his wife, Hamida Mirza, but doesn’t dominate the scene like he might have in a different film; instead, he’s grounded and realistic in a part that could have been a background player. The emotional heart of the film is believed to be the elderly Hindu woman, Mai, who will not leave her house, which is played by Shabana Azmi.

The scenes with Deol are very much reflective of the message of this story, living together and mourning together. Karan Deol has been cast as Javed Mirza, the husband and wife’s son, but his acting style in delivering the dialogue has been met with mixed reviews from critics. The supporting cast is complete with Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh in critical roles relating to the community’s reaction to the Mirza family.

Rajkumar Santoshi is the director and also co-wrote the script of the film which was written by Asghar Wajahat, based on his own play. This is the second time that Santoshi and Deol have collaborated on film, after making several pictures that are known for their more aggressive storylines and loud music. This is the first time that Santoshi and Deol have made a film that goes with a lighter tone and focuses on characters as opposed to action.

Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit had produced the film under their production banner Aamir Khan Productions and it has been distributed by Reliance Entertainment. Director Santosh Sivan’s cinematography is faithful to 1947 Lahore, with a distinct period feel, while composer A.R. Rahman has designed a score that doesn’t stifle the emotions of the film. Shyam Salgaonkar was the editor of the film.

Batwara 1947 Movie Storyline & Plot

The narrative begins in Meerut with a prosperous and respectable family of Sikandar Mirza, his wife Hamida and their son Javed. That comfort is short-lived as Partition violence comes to their street. Just like thousands of families in August of 1947, they are compelled to abandon everything and cross the border to Pakistan, having nothing but each other with them when they arrive in Lahore.

Batwara 1947 Movie Storyline & Plot

Later, months later, the family is assigned a haveli or house abandoned by the fleeing Hindus in the other direction. However, when they move in, they discover they’re not the only ones. There is still one old lady, called Mai, who is a Hindu. She has not been willing to leave, always hoping that her own family will come home.

Rather than kicking her out, Sikandar and Hamida decide on an unprecedented course of action: They leave her to live with them and slowly, almost quietly, begin to treat her like they treat one of their own. They honor her holidays, prepare the food she is familiar with, and provide her dignity, as the world on the other side of the door would not give it to any one outside the faith.

In an era of suspicion, it’s a gesture of goodwill that will not be overlooked, and it begins to raise questions in their community as to why a Muslim family should be allowing a Hindu woman to stay in their home.

It’s not a plot with plenty of plot twists, but rather a gradual tightening of the screws, in the form of external menace bearing down on the internal construction being carried out by the Mirzas. The second half of the film, a tense scene at the police station and a poignant final-rites scene, strikes the hardest blasters. But at heart “Batwara 1947” is not about Hindus versus Muslims, it’s about what people are willing to cling to while those around them implore them to let go.

Batwara 1947 Movie Budget & Box Office Collection

It is said that “Batwara 1947” cost a total of approximately ₹120 crore. The movie opened on a slow note with a total of ₹5.52 crore on Day 1 and bucked the trend on Day 2, grossing ₹11.5 crore to clock in at ₹18.4 crore for 2 days. It has grossed ₹21.76 crore till now globally and ₹17.80 crore net in India. The numbers may continue to change with the theatrical release of the movie.

Final Word

“Batwara 1947” is an imperfect film, the pacing slows in the first half and a couple of scenes go over their head, and the songs are pretty insignificant. It deserves its end, though. The ending sequence of the funeral and the dignified quietness of Mai remains with you throughout the movie, in a way the better parts of the movie. When you’re in search of a Partition drama that’s less melodramatic than it is compassionate, it’s worth the ticket, even if it’s a bit slow. However, it’s not the noisiest movie of Deol’s career, but it could very well be one of his more heartfelt.
