Carlos Sainz has set himself one main goal for Formula 1 2023: To show consistency again. In the past, the Spaniard was known in particular for adapting quickly to the Formula 1 car of his changing teams. He changed racing teams three times and was able to improve continuously. In 2021 the time had come: Sainz was offered the coveted cockpit at Ferrari.
His debut season was a success. Once again, the Spaniard needed only a short familiarization phase. In 2022 the bitter reality set in: While Charles Leclerc was at least briefly in the running for the world championship, Sainz had to contend with setbacks despite Ferrari’s better performance. His first race win and eight further podium finishes were overshadowed by his numerous retirements. But that is now to be put to an end.
Sainz, Ferrari: Must show consistency again
Sainz starts the new Formula 1 season with an unfinished business. While the 2022 season was sluggish for the Spaniard at the start, he was able to get the maximum out of the Ferrari bolide in the second half of the season. “Last year I had difficulties with a car that required a special driving style. Although it was too late in my opinion, I still adapted,” Sainz said.
The Spaniard was able to adapt, but it didn’t give him much of an advantage in the end. Because: Ferrari had to throttle back the engine in the second half of the season. The performance was strong, but at the same time, they had to contend with reliability problems. “I’m trying to get off to a better start this year and adapt to the conditions of the car,” says Sainz.

Sainz, Ferrari: Would have been WRC-ready in 2021
Despite the low blow in 2022, Sainz is confident. Back in 2021, the Spaniard showed that he could also be consistent in a Ferrari. Back then, he finished on the podium four times in a team with a poor record, collected 164.5 points on his way to 5th place in the world championship, and only failed to score points in two of the 22 Grands Prix – and in these two races, he missed them by a whisker in eleventh place.
