Electric Scooter Motors: When operating an electric scooter, you need two necessary things. One is the battery and the other is the motor. But the motor is the most important thing because without it you can never start a scooter.

If you take a look, you will see electric scooters with different types of motors in the market. Some scooters have motors in the front wheel hub, some scooters are in the rear and some scooters are in the middle.

If you do not know how to do electric scooter motor works then you will never understand what happens. So let’s find out how the scooter motor works.

What are the Types of Electric Scooter motors?

Electric scooters usually use two types of motors. One is Brushed DC motors and the other is Brushless DC motors. Let us know how these two types of motors work.

Brushed DC Motor

The motors that also supply electric current to the electromagnet coils of the rotor through a pair of brushes are the brushed DC motor. Its main feature is the part of the motor through which electricity flows in the room. These motors were developed in the 19th century. It is quite popular due to its ability to operate easily and at a low cost.

How Brushed DC Motor Works?

The following tasks will occur when you turn on the brushed DC motor:

How Brushed DC Motor Works

  • First, the electric current from the brush will flow to the commuter and from there to the winding of the electromagnet of the rotor.
  • It comes with a magnetic field in the rotor. This rotor contacts the magnetic field of the permanent magnets of the stator assembly.
  • In the end, a magnetic field creates an interaction that tempts the rotor to rotate and convert the electrical energy of the source into rotational energy.

One important thing to note about this process is tha,t the magnetic field of the rotor moving changes the direction of rotation every 180 degrees. The commutator and the brush reserves the direction of current flow per 180 degrees so that the direction of rotation keep constant.

Brushless DC Motors

Most of the electric scooters on the market today are powered by brushless DC motors. The main reason for using it is that it can be fitted inside the front wheel hub of the scooter. No need to frame separately later.

By listing the name of this motor, you will surely understand that this motor does not have a brush for power supply. It comes with a completely different design than the brushed motor. It has a different design as well as different working principles. This type of motor was invented in the 1970s. This motor now become so popular mainly because of its long life and low noise.

How Brushless DC Motor Works?

You will be amazed to know that the working process of a brushless DC motor is quite simple. The magnetic field rotates the rotor when an electric current is supplied to the stator coils. The coils in these motors never rotate, meaning they do not require a brush or commuter.

Since the coils are fixed in place, the question arises of how to keep the rotation of the motor one-way by changing the polarity of the electromagnet. For this, you will need to use a controller that works with a rotor position sensor or a motor body magnet.

However, it is noteworthy that there are some differences between these two types of controllers. Do you like to know them? Let’s check out:

Sensor-based BLDC controller: This type of controller has a sensor attached to the rotor. This rotor helps to determine its position at any time. The controller then receives the location data. This time the controller transmits current to a specific coil with a certain polarity so that the magnetic field always ensures that the rotor is rotating correctly.

Sensorless BLDC controller: In this controller, you can find the electromagnets are placed on the body of the motor. When the rotor is rotating, electric current flows through the electromagnet coils. The intensity and direction of these currents greatly influence the controller in rotating the motor to the specific coils of the stator.

If you compare BLDC motor and brushless motor then you surely understand which one is easier to use. Because of the need of a controller on BLDC motor, its using process is little bit complicated. But, you will happy to know that BLDC motors have many advantages that make them suitable for many applications, especially for electric scooters.

Which Electric Scooter Motor is the Right Choice for You?

When you know how do electric scooter motor works, then you can easily understand which motor would be ideal for you to use. There are several things to keep in mind when choosing an electric scooter motor.

You may think that reliability, complexity or durability is the most important things to consider. But you’re wrong. Yes, that’s right those are very important things but the most vital one the cost. If you know how much you can spend on it then you can easily choose the right one. But in the end, it all comes down to your personal decision.

All the motor types have their own advantages and disadvantages. So considering all these advantages and disadvantages you have to choose the right motor for you.
